President's Day Parade

The kids were off for President's Day.  Surely there would be something fun to do in our nation's capital?  The country's largest President's Day parade in Alexandria, VA did not disappoint!  We had a brisk, but sunny day to take the metro a couple of stops up to King Street and walk down to where the parade was being held.   The parade was almost two hours long!  Our kids were even featured in the Alexandria Times the following week!

Chinese New Year

On Chinese New Year, one of Abby's classmates in Sunday School wore an ornate dress to celebrate.  Abby was disappointed that she hadn't done the same.  So, the following week Abby dressed up for Chinese New Year and wore this to church!   Too funny!

Abby's Day

Swim classes, and swimming with friends on Friday afternoons
 Meeting friends at the park

Matching her pajamas to her stuffed animals
Riding in the kid cart at Kohls (Alex vehemently despises this store)
 Grocery shopping
Swimming some more at SouthRun...it helps that it is literally across the street from our house!
Playing Clifford's Phonics on the computer, although in this pic she does not look happy about it
Riding bikes...someone will surely need a new bike this summer!

Jackie and Scott's New Place

 Yummy bagels and cupcakes!
Abby didn't exactly wear appropriate shoes for walking around the city.
Scott and Alex raced home, but were slowed by stoplights on each corner.

We all love Jackie and Scott's new house!  While still in D.C., it is easier to get to from our place and there is plenty of street parking in the area.  It's also within walking distance of Union Market, so what's not to love?

Dress Up

This was most likely any given day afterschool.  Abby loves dressing up in her Princess garb, pretending to be "Sophia the First".  She's also managed to adopt two imaginary friends, Jane and Ruby, who I've discovered are Sophia's friends on the show.

Pinewood Derby

Can you see me working concessions in the background?  I was smart to take the first shift in the morning before lunch!
Pikachu on a skateboard, of course.
Abby and Celia working on some artwork in their matching, bedazzled "Scout Sister" shirts.

Alex's Pikachu car earned him 2nd Place, Best in Show for his den!  This event, with close to 100 scouts, takes forever.  The boys, however, LOVE it, and somehow didn't notice that we were there for hours and hours!  They each race a few times within their dens and then they have awards.

Massanutten Ski Trip

We spent January 26-29 at Massanutten Resort in McGaheysville, VA with our friends, The Prices.  The house we rented was perfect for both families with plenty of room to spread out, grill out, and chill out.  There were TVs in every room, a pool table, ping pong table, air hockey, foosball, a Wii in the boy's room and plenty of space to run around.

Despite the lack of freshly fallen snow, we managed to ski all day one of the days.  Alex, Sammy, and Everett went to ski school from 9-2 while Brad, Amie and I tried to remember how to ski on our own.  It was amazing how easily the kids picked up the sport.  Alex loved it!  The minute he got out of class he was ready to hop on the lift and show us all he had learned.  We were so proud of him!  Mom's classic move was doing the splits while exiting the ski lift, while Brad moved off the bunny slope to more difficult trails.

While we were skiing, Sam offered to watch Abby and Celia.  They played games, went to the park, and out to lunch.  We all met back up for tubing at 5.  Tubing was awesome, but it went so fast that little Abby gave up after one run down the track.  It's fun to ride the little escalator up the hill with your tube but all the bouncing on the way down did startle her.

That was a really long day, but the next day was much warmer so we had picked the best day for sure to do the snow sports.  Go-karting was our sport of choice on day 2!  Honestly, Abby is still talking about the go-karts and can't wait to go again.  This resort is awesome, year round!  There was plenty we didn't see and we look forward to going back sometime.  We'd rent that house again in a heartbeat!

SNOW!

Yes, we are way behind on blog updates!

We had a "major" snowstorm on Thursday morning, January 24.  This led to a two hour delay...plenty of time to go out and play in the inch or two on the driveway.  The kids were so excited to see snow, regardless of the amount.  I think the kids even got out of school two hours early the next day due to the threat of measurable snow.  We may have received one more inch.  While it may sound silly, Fairfax County schools includes 196 schools over a 395 sq mile radius, so while we didn't get much snow, areas north and west of here probably did.  Such a difference from life in Troy School district in IL with 7 schools!
