Can We Go to the Jungle?

Yesterday Alex asked several times if we could go to the jungle. I told him there aren't any jungles in the Chicago area, but that we'd go to the zoo when the weather gets warmer. I asked him what lives in the jungle and he said "giraffes, monkeys, snakes, flowers, grass, kids, cars and Scooter". So, we turned his train tent into a jungle with his stuffed animals and Scooter. It was too crowded to take a picture, but you get the idea.

Today he asked to go to the beach...I second that request!!

Here's a photo of Alex playing on his new street carpet. It has train tracks, roads, lakes, and buildings on it and is perfect for him to drive on. I found it at a local church baby sale last Saturday and it had hardly been used.

A Good Sport

"Mom, Scooter needs a hat too". Of course, Scooter immediately thought it was something to eat.

Repetition, Repetition, Repetition

Driving home from dinner the other night, Alex began singing along to his CD in the car. We have had this CD in the car for as long as I can remember (a year or more) and he loves listening to "5 Little Monkeys Jumping On the Bed". Imagine our surprise when he started singing along to all the little songs on here. It was very cute, and he operated on about only a 5 second delay with the rest of the song :)

We also fall into these ruts where Alex wants to read the same 3 books over and over again at bedtime. Well, now he reads them back to us! I guess he has just memorized what each page says. Although, today I asked him "What can you do with a new baby?" and he replied "you can cuddle it, rock it to sleep, let it pull your nose, or take it for a walk to show my friends". These are the same answers given in the Mercer Mayer book "The New Baby". We decided to start reading that book because our neighbor's new baby is going to be joining us on Fridays and Alex hasn't had a ton of exposure to new babies.

40 Degree Drop

It is supposed to drop 40 degrees this afternoon and start precipitating. However, this morning when we went out it was surprisingly "warm". We'll plan to stay in during the great temperature drop!

Welcome Home!

Alex was so happy to see Daddy last night when he returned from his long trip to D.C.! He even got to stay up extra late to greet Daddy and was up extra early to wake him up :) I decided to break out some vintage photos for this post because they are so cute! Photos are from 8 months (above), 1 month, 9 months, 23 months, and 31 months (current).

My Bird, My Bird

Alex really likes the movie Happy Feet so for Christmas we adopted a penguin at the zoo. They sent him this plush penguin puppet (which I'm confident was probably half of the adoption fee)and he carries it everywhere. He can't go to bed at night without "my Bird, my Bird". I wonder when kids start to give their animals names. The penguin is "Bird", the teddy bear is "Bear" and his giraffe is, well, "Giraffe".
It is cold today, but at least the sun is shining bright. It is much easier to get motivated to get things done and be happy when the sun is out, even if it is in the single digits.

No Jacket

Even after bundling up in all this gear, Alex continued his daily "no jacket" mantra. We still wrestle him into it, but he's never happy about it. In his defense, I don't like wearing a big jacket either, but I'm not 2 and prone to croup.

For Our Houston Friends...

Everyone seems excited about this weekend's anticipated warm-up! Seriously, 32 is a HUGE improvement over the single digits we've been seeing the past few days. Snow is falling now, should get a few more inches before morning. Alex is thrilled!

Cassie

Cassie was jealous that Scooter had his own blog post so I promised her equal blog time. Cassie is one year older than Scooter. We adopted her from the same rescue organization when she was 5 or 6 months old, Dec 2003. This is the first photo we took of Cassie. Here, she is still wearing that collar with the bell, which terrified her from that day forward. She is also still scared of her carrier, whereas Scooter just trots right in, almost as if he doesn't remember that means he's headed into the car.
Initially, Cassie ruled the roost around our house. She was very attention-seeking and we had plenty of attention to give her. She used to be the annoying one at night who would meow and keep us awake. I found that her obnoxious behavior stopped when I began maternity leave and was home 24/7 with both her and Scooter. Scooter still acts out in the middle of the night, it's just his thing.
Cassie also loved to climb up on the couch with us as a kitten. She was very cuddly. This behavior is finally beginning to return, as she took a 2 year hiatus from cuddling with us. First there was Scooter, then Alex, then we relocated to IL and now she knows things are calm.
Here's a photo from our first Christmas with the 2 cats. Look how small he is compared to Cassie! They were hilarious together--Scooter really gave Cassie a run for her money, even as a kitten! The first few days she tried to show him who was boss, but he had other plans. To this day they play and chase each other around the house, but the play usually begins with him pouncing on her first, as he is now twice her size. She is beginning to sneak attack Scooter and we all cheer her on.
At our house in Texas, there were really wide window sills where the cats could share a space, usually unwillingly on Cassie's part. Cassie is far more timid than Scooter and is scared of most all strangers. She is also very dainty, very much a girl. Whereas Scooter, well, he'll eat anything, sleep anywhere, and doesn't mind getting dirty outside.

Here's our first night home with Alex after his birth. Both cats just looked on in awe and fear. I slept the whole night with one eye open in fear that one of them would jump up into his crib. They didn't and I chuckle about it to this day. Cassie has finally warmed up to Alex and while she still won't let him pet her, she simply moves a little further away as he approaches. She used to book it to the nearest staircase if Alex even said her name, but she's definitely more comfortable with him. Wow, that took her 2 1/2 years!

Chicken Noodle Soup for the Toddler's Soul...and Shirt, Pants, Table, Floor, etc.

Alex has croup symptoms, again. He's just a croup kid--he gets a cold and the barking cough usually follows. Although, by this afternoon after his monster size nap, he seems to be on the up and up. Croup = lots of fluids, steam, and chicken noodle soup for Alex. I have only tried chicken noodle soup once before with Alex and I fed it to him myself. Well, today I let him try himself. He can eat thicker soups on his own, but chicken noodle is basically broth. We took the approach of breaking up saltines and trying to pick them up with the spoon. This seemed to work well and he swallowed a remarkable amount of chicken broth, I was thrilled. Inevitably, there was soup everywhere, but by the end of lunch he had gotten the hang of it :)
Many thanks to our neighbor Jim for fixing the settings on our camera. Now we can use the flash without everyone turning into white blobs!

Scooter

Brad and I adopted Scooter when he was just a little kitten (maybe 3 or 4 months old) in 2004 from a rescue group who found him behind Outback Steakhouse. He was dining on leftovers from the restaurant each night and I'm sure was bummed to have to make the switch to dry cat food. In any case, Scooter has made up for any food deficiencies he may have had early on. He is on a strict diet from the vet and we are trying to give him a little more exercise.

I just cannot understand why Scooter has weight issues?!? Do all cats fancy chicken fried rice? I'm pretty sure this is NOT on his diet Baby Josh!

Scooter and Alex are great playmates. From a young age Alex has followed Scooter around and Scoot is very patient with him. Even now when Baby Josh is over and pulls Scooter's ears, he holds back the urge to nip at him. These are some fun photos from when Alex was around 14-16 months old.

Their current trick includes Alex waving the feather duster over Scooter's head while Scooter tries to take it away from Alex. Actually I hear Scooter down here alot with that feather duster at night, wrestling around with it. It has a wooden handle and you always know when he's coming up the stairs with that thing as it hits the wall on each step up!

Scooter loves to play outside with us too. He never runs away. In fact, even in our old house where there were lots of other cats around, he would chase them to the edge of the driveway but never ran across. He slips under the fence every now and then, but Alex always busts him and he returns quickly.

The really cold weather is hard for him because he's stuck in the house too with us. As an alternative, he meows inside to be let out into the garage so he can go out there to "play" at night. One night he brought back a very special surprise--poor little field mouse--but Scooter was SO proud.
This is our favorite picture of Alex and "Ter" as he calls him. Alex adores Scooter. If we leave Alex's door open at night (which is very rare), Scooter will climb up and sleep on Alex's bed with him. We keep this photo on the fridge to remind us not to be too mean to Scooter. He meows, alot, when he wants attention, and it is so loud, and so annoying. During the day Alex attends to Ter's needs, but at night he wears our patience thin.
Here's a photo of Scooter when we first got him. He was pretty bow-legged as a kitten but that has straightened out quite a bit. We love our little Ter!

The Preschool Hunt is Over!

This morning the car thermometer registered 2 degrees outside but I'm pretty sure it was much colder than that. I'm not sure our warm weather vehicle knew what to do with 2 degrees. I am anxious to see if it will record anything less than zero though.

Good news is, Alex got into Preschool for the fall! They made it sound like there would be these long lines the morning of registration. I got there an hour early and was #3 in line. Luckily they let us register early and didn't make the 4 of us sit until 9 to start registering. Maybe the cold temps kept people away?!? Either way he got into the class we wanted and all is well :)

There's an R in my bowl

At dinner the other night, Alex said "Mom, there's an R in my bowl" and from there he proceeded to point out all the letters on his spoon before he would eat it. It was really funny. To be honest I had forgotten that we buy the ABC Spaghetti O's--but Alex didn't!

Museum Fun

Over Christmas break, my friend (and Alex's Godmother), Karen and I took Alex to the DuPage Children's Museum in Naperville. I forgot my camera that day, but Alex really had a great time. They have a great interactive water section where I think he could have played for hours if we let him. He was very wet by the time he was done, but he loved it!

They had these great chubby little paint brushes and no-spill paint cups in the gift shop that we brought home to try out. I set them up with just water at the easel and Josh and Alex have fun "painting" on the chalkboard. Now, this is my kind of painting!
We cleared out our guest bedroom and turned it into a playroom for some of the bigger toys. It is also nice and warm up there during the day because we face the sun.

Yesterday we went downtown to the Museum of Science and Industry with our neighbor and her sister in law. The boys had fun chasing each other around and just for the record, they have a surprisingly nice food court :) Alex loves looking at the train exhibit they have there and boy was he tired after lunch--he let everyone know it!

Alex sitting on the cow in the farm exhibit--enjoying a few snacks, shh, don't tell the security personnel. They busted us for having snack time later.

Here he is entering the train exhibit, Alex's favorite every time!

The Gym

We were all in need of a little physical activity, so after much deliberation, we have joined a gym. We are really excited about it and hope to get a lot out of our membership, especially during these cold winter months when it is impossible to get much exercise outside. Tonight was our first time going as a family.

We dropped Alex off in the nursery and he did really well at the start. Each treadmill has an LCD screen in front of it that you can control and if you tune to a certain channel you can see the nursery, which is reassuring. We watched Alex make a break for the door after about 10 minutes and the teen working in there was very patient with him. He pouted and cried for a few minutes but he came around and was playing when we went in to pick him up.

We really wanted to retrieve him on a good note from the nursery in the hopes that he'll want to return there. Next time I'll try taking him in the morning and maybe he'll be a little happier at that time of day. Now that he knows we will definitely be back to get him, it should go smoother.

Ooh, a surprise perk--those TVs have cable. How cool is that?!? Not just 5 or 10 channels but the full 70 or 80 channel line-up. I couldn't' believe it. Brad says I should get out more because it is not that exciting.

There is also a nice warm indoor pool that Alex is dying to try out so the next time they have open swim, we'll be sure to take him.

A, B, Cs and 1, 2, 3s

Alex is loving this Thomas the Train (go figure) computer he received as a Christmas gift. He can recognize his numbers to 10 and all the capital letters. He's able to count to 10 and while he can't spell "Alex" yet he knows it contains "ex". I knew we'd been making progress on these numbers but I am absolutely floored by the progress with the letters! Last night I stood making dinner in the kitchen while he pressed each letter as it randomly asked him which ones to press. There are about 30 games you can play on this thing but so far we've only done 2 of them (numbers and capital letters).

Today I spread out a bunch of magnetic letters on the floor and asked him to find various ones and put them on the easel. I cannot believe he can pick out specific letters from a pile like that. I shouldn't act so surprised but really, who would have thought Thomas the magical laptop could help him learn this in just a few weeks? Whoever designs these things is brilliant!

Bedtime Routine

Alex's current favorite book is I'm Sorry by Gina and Mercer Mayer. We've been trying to put this lesson to good use and I really think the book is helping to reinforce when to say "I'm Sorry".

At bedtime it often looks like a disco in Alex's room, and he loves it that way. He still has colored Christmas lights up on his bookcase. There is the CARS lamp he received for Christmas, the light on the top of his monitor base, the nightlight plugged into the wall, and the light on top of his humidifier. We tone it down a bit in there when we go up for the night--try to give the electric meter a rest.

Bad Hair Day

After a few mornings of waking up with crazy bedhead like this, we decided it was time for a trim!

Granted this is a post-bath photo, but the hair is definitely more controllable.

Packing Up

Why is it so much easier to put up the ornaments than to take them down? There is such anticipation for the holidays when we start decorating in December, but in January it is hard to get the motivation to take all the decorations down. Still working on packing all these ornaments up, but for now, they are on the dining room table.

This is our favorite new ornament of 2007.

"Hey, Apple Juice"

Whenever we want to get Alex's attention, we say "Hey Alex". We didn't realize how often we were saying the word "Hey", and apparently it has rubbed off on Alex. Over the Christmas holiday he addressed Mom by saying "Hey, Apple Juice". All that was missing from the end of his exclamation was the word "now". After a few more attempts at using "hey" to address his elders, I think he got the hint that this was not acceptable talk. We're also phasing this word out of our vernacular.

Big Bwagie

There is a twin bed in the guest room with an old blanket on it that I think I used as a kid on my twin bed. Wouldn't you know it has satin trim? We couldn't figure out why Alex started climbing up into that bed and laying down under the covers (he never does this in his bed). Well, he now has a new "bwagie" and it is huge in comparison to the others since it is sized for a twin bed. You should see him drag this thing down the stairs in the morning!!

Current favorite things

Alex is all about trains...morning, noon, and night. He wakes up in the morning and first thing he asks to do is "pway twains?". I took this picture the other day of him laying across the track to play with the new motorized Thomas Steam Engine set on the floor. You add water to the engine and it "steams" along the track, very cute.

Some of Alex's other favorite things:

Bwagies (blankies)

Puzzles

Books

Playing Cars or with anything from the movie CARS

Shoveling snow

Watching PBS shows

Pizza

Pickles

ANY fruit

Apple Juice

Airplanes and Trucks

Wearing his pajamas

Baby Einstein CDs at bedtime

That about sums up each day :) Actually, pickles is a relatively new addition. In fact, today he picked out pickles at the grocery store, held the jar all the way up to the cash register, and ate them as soon as we got home. He also spotted the red raspberries and really wanted to have those to eat too this week. The dialogue went like this:

Alex: "Jacket off, eat pickles"
Mom: "Ok, sure"
Alex (while eating pickles): "Eat red raspberries"
Mom: "Not with your pickles Alex, we'll have those with dinner"
